At a Mountain Crossings employee's suggestion, I erected my tarp, in the dark, on the rocky ground behind the outfitter's and crawled in, still wearing my hiking clothes, exhausted and grateful for protection from the fierce wind. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph sounded like a freight train bearing down on me, and the temperature reached 14F. This 8 AM photo shows the wind-flattened tarp, with one front stake pulled out; I was unable to drive it back in during the night.
