About 2:00 PM I caught my first sight of Fontana Lake (excepting, perhaps, the "Vista" south of Dicks Creek Gap!). Long frustrating switchbacks often had "northbound" hikers (like me) walking south (by the compass); perhaps understanding the confusion, a welcome trail sign pointed "Northbound" and "Southbound"... with my compass pointing south and north, respectively! About 3:30 PM I reached Highway 28 and telephoned Fontana Lodge for its shuttle.
